Steel Form Deck Introduction

Tensilform® and Tensilvent® form deck systems are routinely specified for schools, warehouses, and low- and high-rise office buildings.

Both Tensilform and Tensilvent provide a strong, secure, stay in-place form for poured concrete applications. Installation is fast, easy, and economical: The need for temporary wood forming is eliminated, as well as the costly stripping and clean-up that inevitably follows. Installation of Wheeling form deck is simple because sides and ends are designed to overlap with a close, snug fit which reduces welding time. Furthermore, before and during concrete placement, Wheeling form decks provide a safe working surface for workers and tradesmen.

Tensilform is designed to serve as a permanent steel base for poured reinforced concrete floor slabs. A built-in side lap vent eliminates the necessity of using separate vent clips. Tensilvent, which has all the physical characteristics of Tensilform - plus slots to accelerate concrete drying time, is used primarily as a roof deck with lightweight insulating concrete fills. Structurally, both systems provide a strong, efficient section for forming slabs, while giving lateral stability to structural members.

Tensilform and Tensilvent are made from high strength, full hard steel that conforms to ASTM A653 SS Grade 80. Both are galvanized in accordance with ASTM A924 Class G-60 and G-90. Uncoated Tensilform, conforming to ASTM A611 Grade E, is available if permanence is not essential. However, Tensilform should always be galvanized when used as a structural support for lightweight insulating concrete fill.

Diaphragm Design - Form deck can be utilized in diaphragm design with lateral loading. The deck can be used in floor systems composed of structural normal weight or lightweight concrete slabs (2-1/2" minimum cover) and roof systems composed of lightweight insulating concretes (2-1/2" minimum cover) or insulating concrete used in combination with expanded polystyrene insulation board. Fire Rated Construction -Tensilform and Tensilvent form decks have been classified by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. and listed in the U.L. Fire Resistance Directory P-series roof assemblies and D, G-series floor assemblies. See page TT-19 for a listing of U.L. assemblies with classified form deck.
